Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (M5) Review: Would Buyers Buy It Again?

How this review was made: We did not test this laptop in person. This verdict is based on our analysis of expert reviews and an aggregate of review scores, all listed at the end of this article. We found very little multi-year owner data on the M5 model, and say so below. Our method.

A premium laptop that justifies its cost for most people, with caveats

Reviewers across the board call the M5 MacBook Air the best Mac for most people: it is fanless and silent, has 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage as the starting point, and lasted roughly 15 hours in web-browsing tests. The downsides are real but narrow: a 60 Hz non-mini-LED screen, two USB-C ports, soldered memory and storage, and throttling under long heavy loads. It is premium-priced, and light users with an M4 Air or a cheaper alternative gain little by paying more.

Buy it again if you…

  • want a silent, light laptop for school, work or travel
  • plan to keep one laptop for many years
  • are upgrading from an M1 or older Mac or an aging Windows laptop

Skip it if you…

  • already own an M4 MacBook Air
  • need sustained heavy rendering or a brighter, smoother mini-LED screen
  • need many ports or a touchscreen

The 13-inch MacBook Air with Apple's M5 chip keeps the thin fanless aluminium design and adds a faster chip, a larger base storage tier and Apple's N1 wireless chip with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.

Because it launched recently, we rely on expert testing rather than long-term owner reports, and we flag where evidence is thin.

What reviewers love

Fast without a fan.Tom's Hardware measured 4,168 single-core and 17,067 multi-core Geekbench 6 scores. TechRadar said it was hard to stress with heavy multitasking and video editing.
Battery that lasts a day.Tom's Hardware measured about 15.5 hours and TechRadar about the same for web browsing, roughly 1.5 hours more than the M4 Air in TechRadar's tests.
Doubled starting storage and faster SSD.The base storage rose from 256GB to 512GB, and TechRadar measured much faster drive speeds than on the M4 model.
Comfort and design.Reviewers praise the keyboard, the haptic touchpad, Touch ID, a good webcam and surfaces that stay comfortable under load.

What reviewers criticize

Throttling on long heavy jobs.In Tom's Hardware testing, sustained Cinebench scores settled well below the starting score because there is no fan.
An older-style screen. It is a 60 Hz IPS panel with a notch. Macworld, quoted by Notebookcheck, considers the 60 Hz SDR panel dated, and Tom's Hardware measured about 459 nits of peak brightness.
Few ports, soldered parts. Two USB-C ports plus MagSafe, and memory and storage cannot be upgraded later.
Little reason for M4 owners.Reviewers describe it as a refinement. TechRadar says M4 owners do not need to upgrade, while M1 owners will notice a real jump.

Is the premium worth it?

For most buyers, yes: the combination of silence, battery life, a 16GB baseline and years of expected software support is hard to match, and doubling the base storage offsets some of the higher entry cost. The premium is harder to justify if you only browse and write, in which case the M4 Air covers the same needs according to iGeeksBlog. Heavy video or 3D work points to a MacBook Pro with its fan and brighter screen.

How it holds up over time

We found no multi-year data on the M5 Air. Earlier fanless Airs have a long reputation for lasting, but we are not claiming that here. The soldered memory means you should buy the memory and storage you will need from the start.

Tips from reviewers

  • Buy enough storage at the start, because nothing can be upgraded later.
  • Add a USB-C hub if you connect a monitor and accessories.
  • For long exports or renders, expect some slowdown or choose a model with a fan.
