Eufy Video Doorbell S220 (Battery) Review: Is It Worth Buying Again?

How this review was made: We did not test this doorbell in person. This verdict rests on published expert tests, a regulator announcement and company statements, all listed at the end. Consumer Reports keeps its overall score for this model behind a membership, so we cite only the parts of its write-up that are public. Our method.

Skip

Skip it: independent testing flagged security and alert speed

The S220 battery doorbell is attractive on paper: 2K video, built-in storage and no required monthly plan, and one UK expert test in 2023 named it a favourite. But Consumer Reports' public write-up says this model has very weak security, with no two-factor sign-in, no automatic firmware updates and no required complex passwords, and rates its alerts very slow at 9.2 seconds on average. Add the brand's documented encryption problems, including a 2025 New York Attorney General settlement, and we think buyers have safer, faster options for a camera at the front door.

Buy it again if you…

  • want a no-subscription doorbell with local storage and are willing to harden the setup
  • care more about video quality than alert speed
  • already use eufy gear and accept the privacy trade-offs

Skip it if you…

  • want the fastest possible alerts when someone is at the door
  • want strong built-in account protections for video and personal data
  • are uneasy about a brand with a history of encryption and privacy disputes

The Eufy Video Doorbell S220 (battery-powered kit) is a 2K doorbell that stores clips locally on a base station, so it needs no cloud subscription. It runs on a rechargeable battery or on doorbell wiring.

This is a skip verdict, so we want to be precise about what supports it. The strongest evidence is Consumer Reports' public write-up of this exact model, plus a regulator action and company admissions about eufy cameras more broadly. We separate the two below, because the older findings were not tested on the S220 itself.

What reviewers like

Easy and cheap to run.Expert Reviews UK called the battery model its new favourite video doorbell in 2023, praising easy installation and clip storage with no subscription.
Good video.Consumer Reports calls night video very good and daytime video fairly sharp, though not as good as the better models.
Useful detection controls.Expert Reviews UK points to human detection and activity zones that cut false alerts.

What the evidence says against it

Very weak security.Consumer Reports' public summary says the model has very weak security. Its feature list shows no two-factor authentication, no automatic firmware updates and no requirement for complex passwords.
Very slow alerts.Consumer Reports measured an average of 9.2 seconds for alerts to reach the app and calls that very slow. For comparison, its page for the wired S220 reports 3.7 seconds, so the delay is specific to this version.
Privacy handling rated substandard.Consumer Reports rates eufy's data control and transparency as substandard compared with many rivals.
A brand security record. In January 2023 Anker acknowledged that eufy cameras did not offer native end-to-end encryption as it had said, and that web-portal streams were sent unencrypted. In January 2025 the New York Attorney General announced a settlement with three companies distributing eufy-branded products, citing video streams that were not always securely encrypted. It named doorbells among the eufy product line, not the S220 specifically.

What we cannot tell you

Consumer Reports' overall score for this model is members-only, so we cannot say how it ranks. The regulator action and the 2023 admission concern eufy products generally, and the company said it was adding encryption, audits and a bug bounty program afterwards. We did not find a company response to the Consumer Reports finding on this model. Mozilla's 2026 privacy review of a different eufy camera, the Indoor Cam S350, scored it 4 out of 10 and said the track record made it hard to recommend, while noting local storage works without the cloud.

If you buy it anyway

  • Use a unique, long password for the eufy account, since the model does not enforce complex ones.
  • Keep clips local and skip optional cloud features if you do not need them.
  • Update firmware yourself, because automatic updates are listed as missing.
  • Test your alert delay by pressing the button and timing the phone notification.
