How this review was made: We did not test this streamer in person. This verdict is based on our analysis of expert reviews, a nearly year-long owner test by 9to5Google and an aggregated summary of owner feedback, all listed at the end of this article. Our method.

Depends

A great pick for Google homes, less so for everyone else

The Google TV Streamer replaces the Chromecast with a small box that sits beside the TV. It has 4 GB of memory, 32 GB of storage, Gigabit Ethernet, Dolby Vision and Atmos, a remote-finder button and a built-in Matter and Thread hub with an on-screen Google Home panel. Expert Reviews called it Google's strongest streamer yet. But reviewers note it uses an older chip, has only Wi-Fi 5, and a 9to5Google writer who used it daily for almost a year saw occasional lock-ups and called it a compromise. If you live in Google's ecosystem, it is the best Google TV device. If not, a cheaper Fire TV or Roku stick does much the same job.

Buy it again if you…

  • use Google Home, Nest cameras or Google Assistant
  • want a Matter and Thread hub built into the TV box
  • prefer Google TV's recommendations and cleaner home screen
  • want a wired Ethernet connection

Skip it if you…

  • want the fastest, most future-proof streaming hardware
  • need Wi-Fi 6 or 6E
  • play lots of local media files in unusual formats
  • want a box hidden behind the TV

The Google TV Streamer 4K is Google's set-top box running Google TV. Unlike the old Chromecast dongle, it sits on a shelf or beside the TV and connects by HDMI. It comes with a voice remote with Google Assistant.

We combined expert reviews, a long-term owner test and aggregated owner feedback to see who should buy it.

What owners love

Polished software.Expert Reviews said the Google TV interface makes content easier to reach, and Android Central found its ads less intrusive than on rival devices.
Good recommendations. After almost a year, 9to5Google's writer said Google TV surfaces good picks, especially once you rate what you watch.
A smart home screen. The Home panel controls lights, locks and thermostats, and seeing camera and doorbell alerts full-screen on a big TV was more convenient than a Nest Hub.
A better remote.Reviewers liked the redesigned remote and its volume buttons, and Android Central used the remote-finder button when the remote ended up in a toy bin.

What owners complain about

An older chip.Android Central said it uses a processor about three years old, the same as a 2021 Fire TV Stick, and 9to5Google saw occasional lock-ups and apps needing a refresh after a cold start.
Wi-Fi 5 only.Expert Reviews listed the lack of Wi-Fi 6 as a con, and 9to5Google saw occasional playback trouble on a congested network.
Bigger than a dongle. The long-term tester found the box harder to justify than the smaller Chromecast, and the remote-finder button less useful with the box behind the TV.
Small gaps.No HDMI cable is included, many media codecs are unsupported, and some game-streaming apps are missing.
Some faulty units. An aggregated summary of owner feedback mentions a minority of units arriving defective, though Google's support was generally described as efficient.

How it holds up over time

9to5Google's writer still used it every day after nearly a year as the main living-room device, which is a good sign for reliability. But they also called it a compromise rather than a flagship, mainly because of its limited processing power. With an older chip at launch, it may feel slower sooner than newer hardware.

Tips from owners

  • Have an HDMI cable ready, since none is in the box.
  • Use the Ethernet port if your Wi-Fi is busy.
  • Rate what you watch to improve recommendations.
  • Add a USB-C hub if you want extra storage or accessories.
