How this review was made: We did not test this speaker in person. This verdict is based on our analysis of expert reviews and aggregated owner feedback, all listed at the end of this article. A great pocket speaker, as long as you do not need deep bass or marathon battery

Reviewers are consistently positive. What Hi-Fi rated sound, build and features 5 out of 5 and called it the best Go yet. SoundGuys scored it 8.3 out of 10, and Tom's Guide called it an excellent choice among budget Bluetooth speakers. The recurring weak spot is battery: it is rated for 8 hours, and Tom's Guide measured about 9 at moderate volume, but rivals lasted longer. Bass is limited by the size. Because it launched in 2026, durability over years is unproven, although the IP68 rating and drop tests are encouraging.

Buy it again if you…

  • want a small speaker for a bag, pocket, shower or beach
  • care about clear mids and vocals more than deep bass
  • may pair two speakers later for stereo
  • want an app with EQ and lighting controls

Skip it if you…

  • need all-day battery on a single charge
  • want deep, room-filling bass
  • expect a charging cable in the box

The JBL Go 5 is the latest ultra-compact Bluetooth speaker in JBL's Go line. It adds an IP68 rating, edge lighting, a 7-band EQ in the JBL Portable app, Auracast and AirTouch stereo pairing with a second Go 5.

We looked at expert reviews and aggregated owner feedback to see how much of an upgrade it is over the Go 4, and where a speaker this small hits its limits.

What owners and reviewers love

Big sound from a tiny body.Tom's Guide found it gets very loud for its size, with crisp treble and clear vocals. What Hi-Fi called it punchy and engaging across genres.
Rugged build.Tom's Guide dropped it from about 2 m onto a wooden floor with no damage. Aggregated owner feedback highlights waterproof, dustproof and drop-proof use outdoors and by the pool.
Useful extras. The app has a 7-band EQ and lighting controls, and two Go 5 speakers can pair for stereo by tapping them together. Owners say a pair fills a room well.
Wired lossless option. What Hi-Fi noted that playing over USB-C sounds slightly clearer than Bluetooth.

What owners complain about

Battery trails rivals.TechRadar and Tom's Guide both list battery as a con. Tom's Guide measured about nine hours at roughly half volume, while the Tozo PE1 and Tribit StormBox Mini+ lasted longer.
Limited bass.Reviewers say the compact size limits low-end punch. Tom's Guide notes response reaches only about 100 Hz.
Playtime Boost costs sound quality. What Hi-Fi says it strips out most of the bass, so treat it as a last resort.
Small annoyances. No charging cable in the box, the edge light color cannot be changed, and owners report stereo pairing can be finicky with other JBL models.

How it holds up after months of use

This is a 2026 launch, so we did not find multi-year owner reports. Early evidence on build is positive: the IP68 rating, a drop test with no damage and consistent praise for ruggedness. Slow charging and short runtime are the most common long-run frustrations in owner summaries.

Tips from owners

  • Use the EQ in the JBL Portable app to add some warmth to the bass.
  • Save Playtime Boost for when you really need the extra hours.
  • Buy a second one later if you want stereo or more fill.
  • Bring a USB-C cable, since none is included.
