Fine for soft smoothies, but stronger personal blenders are a better buy

The original Magic Bullet is small, simple and easy to clean, and a home-cook reviewer at Almost Practical liked it for soft smoothies, dips and sauces. But in Shouldit's lab-style tests its 250W motor failed both the crushed-ice and frozen-fruit smoothie tests, the blade jammed and needed shaking, the lid leaked, and the motor can only run about a minute before a thermal cutoff. The manufacturer itself says not to crush ice. Since most people buy a personal blender for frozen smoothies, we think higher-powered alternatives are the better repeat purchase.

Buy it again if you…

  • blend soft fresh fruit, dips and sauces in small batches
  • have very little counter space
  • want the simplest possible blender

Skip it if you…

  • make frozen-fruit smoothies or blend ice
  • want to blend nuts, seeds or tough greens smooth
  • want a sturdy blender that lasts

The Magic Bullet is the original compact personal blender: a 250W motor base, a cross blade and small cups you blend in and drink from. It became famous through its long-running infomercials and is still one of the most popular small blenders.

Because it remains so popular, we looked carefully at how it performs in hands-on tests and what goes wrong with it over time.

What owners love

Small and handy.Almost Practical's reviewer loved having a small blender ready on the counter and called it space-saving and easy to clean.
Good with soft foods.Smoothies with soft fresh fruit, dips and sauces worked well, and onions and walnuts came out finely chopped with a few larger pieces.
Simple to assemble.Shouldit gave assembly and the blending cup top marks.

What owners complain about

Fails ice and frozen fruit. In Shouldit's tests about 83% of the ice stayed unblended, and a frozen-fruit smoothie still had strawberry chunks after two minutes.
Jams and needs shaking.Shouldit found the blade sometimes jams, and Almost Practical had to stop, shake and re-blend to break up whole strawberries.
Leaks.Shouldit's cup leaked in the smoothie test. Repair guides list loose blades, torn gaskets and cracked cups as common causes of leaks.
Flimsy build.Shouldit called the mostly plastic build poor and noted the base moves around during use.

How it holds up over time

Repair guides list failures such as the unit not turning on, blades not turning and stopping mid-blend, along with leaks from worn gaskets or cracked cups. Gaskets and cups can be replaced. Some owners have used theirs for years for light tasks, but pushing it with frozen fruit or hard ingredients strains the small motor and blade.

Tips from owners

  • Add liquid first and use fresh rather than frozen fruit.
  • Blend in short bursts to avoid the thermal cutoff.
  • Check the gasket under the blade if it starts to leak.
  • Never blend hot or carbonated liquids in the sealed cup.
