Depends

Handy for occasional sleepless nights, but start lower and ask first

Natrol's 5 mg fast dissolve tablets rate 4.4 out of 5 on Target, and many owners say they fall asleep faster without feeling groggy the next morning. But the Sleep Foundation says many people do as well on 0.5 to 1 mg and suggests starting low, the label says it is for occasional short-term use, and the listing shows no third-party verification. Recent reviews also complain about a reformulated taste and wheat in the formula. Melatonin is not recommended for children without a doctor. It can make sense for an adult who has checked with a clinician; it is not a nightly fix.

Buy it again if you…

  • are adults wanting help with an occasional sleepless night or jet lag, after checking with a clinician
  • dislike swallowing pills and want a tablet that melts in the mouth
  • already know 5 mg suits you

Skip it if you…

  • are buying for a child without a doctor's advice
  • want a low starting dose such as 0.5 to 1 mg
  • have long-term insomnia (ask a doctor about other treatments first)
  • avoid wheat or soy (reviewers report both in the current formula)

This review summarizes buyer experiences and published research and is not medical advice. Dietary supplements are not evaluated by the FDA to treat, cure or prevent any disease, including insomnia. Melatonin is a hormone. Check with a doctor or pharmacist before taking it, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take medication (including blood thinners), have epilepsy or another health condition, or are older. Do not give melatonin to a child without a doctor's guidance, and store it out of children's reach.

Dose: more is not better

The Sleep Foundation says most adults take 1 to 5 mg, many find 1 to 3 mg effective, and lower doses of 0.5 to 1 mg can work as well as higher ones for many people. It suggests starting at about 0.5 to 1 mg, 30 to 60 minutes before bed, and staying below 10 mg. Older adults should use the lowest possible dose for a short time and ask a doctor first. At 5 mg per tablet, this product is at the higher end of the usual range.

What the research says

According to the NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), melatonin may help with jet lag, and it helped people with delayed sleep-wake phase disorder fall asleep roughly 20 to 35 minutes sooner in studies. For chronic insomnia, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American College of Physicians found the evidence too weak to recommend it, and cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the recommended first treatment. Short-term use appears safe for most adults, with mild side effects such as headache, dizziness, nausea and sleepiness, but long-term safety data are lacking.

Label accuracy is a real issue

Melatonin products often do not contain what the label says. A 2017 study cited by NCCIH found most of 31 supplements did not match their labels, and some contained serotonin. A 2023 JAMA study of 25 melatonin gummies found 22 were mislabeled, with actual amounts from 74% to 347% of the label. Those studies did not single out this Natrol tablet, but because it shows no USP or NSF mark, there is no independent check of its dose on the listing. Harvard researcher Dr. Pieter Cohen has advised choosing USP- or NSF-certified melatonin.

Children

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine issued a 2022 advisory urging caution about giving melatonin to children and says it should be used only with a doctor's guidance. NCCIH cites a CDC estimate of about 11,000 emergency visits from 2019 to 2022 for young children who swallowed melatonin unsupervised, and poison center reports rose sharply over the past decade. Keep the bottle out of children's sight and reach.

Tips from buyers and experts

  • Ask a clinician about dose before you start, and consider a lower-dose product.
  • Take it 30 to 60 minutes before bed at the same time each night.
  • Use it short term. If you need help sleeping for weeks, talk to a doctor.
  • Store it out of children's reach, since the tablets taste like candy.
