PowerXL Vortex Pro 6-QT Air Fryer Review: Would Owners Buy It Again?

How this review was made: We did not test this air fryer in person. This verdict is based on our analysis of retailer review summaries, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall record and expert tests of PowerXL air fryers. All of these are listed at the end of this article. We found no independent lab or editorial test of this exact 6-quart model, and we say so below. Our method.
A capable basket fryer, but better-proven rivals cost you less risk
We expected to rate this one a skip, but the evidence does not clearly support that. Buyers at Walmart and Kohl's rate the 6-quart Vortex Pro highly and praise its easy controls and juicy results. The PowerXL recall that made headlines in 2023 covered two dual-basket models, not this single-basket fryer. The caveats are real, though. We found no expert test of this exact model. Some reviewers report uneven heating or units that fail, and a ShopSavvy summary of a related PowerXL 5-quart fryer flags failures within a year. Kohl's lists only a 90-day limited warranty for one version. If you want the safest bet, the Ninja and Cosori models below have stronger long-term track records.

- want a roomy 6-quart single basket with simple one-touch presets
- find it at a good deal and are comfortable with a shorter warranty
- cook mostly for a small or medium household
Skip it if you…
- want a model backed by independent expert testing
- want a long warranty and proven multi-year reliability
- need to cook two foods at once in separate baskets
The PowerXL Vortex Pro 6-quart is a single-basket air fryer from Empower Brands. It has a nonstick basket with a removable crisper tray, a digital touch panel with 10 presets, and heat up to 430°F. Retailers list the removable parts as dishwasher safe.
PowerXL sells several versions under this name. Kohl's lists a 1,500-watt version with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth app control and a dehydrate preset, while the BJ's listing (model AF-E6001-A) mentions no Wi-Fi. Check the exact features on the listing you buy from.
This was a skip candidate because PowerXL air fryers have drawn complaints and a large recall. We looked closely at whether those problems apply to this model.

The recall question: is this model affected?
No. In December 2023 the CPSC announced that Empower Brands was recalling about 319,000 PowerXL Vortex Dual-Basket air fryers, models DUAF-10 (10-quart) and DUAF-005 (9-quart). A plastic connector joining the two baskets could break during use and cause burns. The company had 41 reports of breakage, including three burns, and offered a full refund. The recall does not list the single-basket 6-quart Vortex Pro, so this model is not included. The recall does show that the brand has had a design flaw serious enough to pull hundreds of thousands of units.

How it compares in expert tests
We found no independent lab or editorial test of the 6-quart Vortex Pro. The closest is Consumer Reports' test of the smaller PowerXL Maxx 4-quart. It found crispy fries, well-charred broccoli and tender chicken, and called the Maxx relatively quiet. It also found the controls awkward, saw the inside run hotter than the display showed, and called the Maxx overpriced for its usable capacity. Those results suggest PowerXL fryers can cook well, but they do not prove how this model performs. The Ninja and Cosori alternatives below have far more expert and long-term owner evidence behind them.
How it holds up over time
Retailer ratings are high: 4.7 out of 5 from over 2,000 ratings at Walmart and 4.6 out of 5 from over 600 reviews at Kohl's. Most of those ratings come early in ownership, though. We found no multi-year data on this model. Reports of failures on related PowerXL fryers, plus a short warranty, make long-term reliability the biggest unknown.
Tips from owners
- Check food early, since tests of a related PowerXL model found it ran hotter than the display showed.
- Shake or flip halfway through cooking for more even browning.
- Register the product and keep your receipt, given the short warranty window.
- Do not overload the basket. Air needs room to circulate for crisp results.

Frequently asked questions
Is the PowerXL Vortex Pro 6 Qt part of the PowerXL air fryer recall?
No. The December 2023 CPSC recall covered only the PowerXL Vortex Dual-Basket models DUAF-10 and DUAF-005. This single-basket model is not listed.
What was the PowerXL recall about?
A plastic connector joining the two baskets on the dual-basket models could break during use and cause burns. About 319,000 units were recalled, and owners were offered a full refund.
How long is the warranty?
The Kohl's listing shows a 90-day manufacturer's limited warranty. Confirm the terms for the version you buy.
Does it have Wi-Fi?
Some versions do. Kohl's lists a version with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth app control, while other listings do not mention it.
Is it better than a Ninja or Cosori?
We found no head-to-head expert test. Ninja and Cosori fryers have much more expert testing and long-term owner feedback, so they are the safer choice.
