How this review was made: We did not test this tracker in person. This verdict is based on our analysis of expert tests and summarized owner feedback, all listed at the end of this article. Expert reviewers are more positive than our verdict; we explain why below. The best head-to-head network test we found is from 2021 and used an older Tile Mate. Our method.

Good for finding keys in the house, but most buyers have better options

The Tile Mate (2024) is simple to set up, works on both iPhone and Android, adds IP68 water resistance and a Life360 SOS feature, and Tom's Guide rates it a solid home key finder. But its battery is sealed and the tracker is recycled after about three years, Tom's Guide got only about 60 feet of range against a 350-foot claim, and Tile's finding network is far smaller than Apple's or Google's. Owners also report Life360 linking and reliability problems. Because cheaper-to-run rivals on much bigger networks do the hard job, finding things you lost away from home, better, we suggest skipping it unless you already rely on Life360.

Buy it again if you…

  • already use Life360 and want trackers on the same map
  • mainly lose keys inside the home
  • share trackers between iPhone and Android users in one household

Skip it if you…

  • want the best chance of recovering items lost far from home
  • want a tracker with a replaceable battery
  • want the long range the packaging suggests

The Tile Mate (2024) is a small square Bluetooth tracker from Tile, now owned by Life360. It rings from your phone, can ring your phone back, and uses the Tile and Life360 community to report items that are out of range.

It is one of the best-known trackers, so we looked closely at complaints as well as praise, and at how it stacks up against trackers that use Apple's and Google's networks.

What it does well

Easy to set up and use.Owner summaries frequently describe setup as quick and simple.
Good at home.Tom's Guide found it strong for finding items around the house, and its alarm was loud enough to hear at the edge of its tested range.
Works on both platforms.Unlike the AirTag, it works with iPhone and Android, and family items can appear on one Life360 map.
New SOS and better water resistance.A triple press sends your location to Life360 contacts, and IP68 is an upgrade over the 2022 model.

What owners complain about

The battery cannot be replaced. This is the most common complaint in owner summaries. When it dies, the whole tracker is recycled, and one summary reports battery life declining after about six months for some users.
Range far below the box.Tom's Guide got about 60 feet in open space against a 350-foot claim.
A smaller finding network.TechGearLab cites over 70 million monthly Tile users, versus hundreds of millions of Apple devices. In a 2021 TechRadar test with an older Tile Mate, an AirTag was found in 30 minutes while the Tile took almost 12 hours.
App and linking problems.Owners report trouble linking to Life360, the tracker freezing, and patchy tracking at a distance.
Key extras cost more.Left-behind alerts and location history need a paid Tile plan, and Tom's Guide got one alert after it had already driven about a mile away.

Why we say skip

Expert reviewers like the Tile Mate as a home key finder, and it does that job. But a tracker earns its keep when something is lost away from home, and that depends on network size. iPhone owners get a much larger network and a replaceable battery with the AirTag. The Chipolo POP works on either Apple's or Google's network, has a replaceable battery and a 120 dB ring. Unless you are tied to Life360, those are the better buys.

Tips from owners

  • Expect room-to-room range, not hundreds of feet.
  • Note the purchase date, since the sealed battery sets the tracker's lifespan.
  • Choose between SOS and find-your-phone for the button, as Tom's Guide notes they cannot both be used.
