The budget camera to beat, if you are comfortable with Wyze's track record

Tom's Guide gave the Cam v4 its Editor's Choice badge and said no budget camera looks or sounds as good, and Home Cam Cafe called it the first camera to recommend at its price. It records 2.5K video, has a motion-activated color spotlight, is rated IP65 for outdoor use, and can record to a microSD card with no subscription. The catches: the free plan gives only short clips with a five-minute cooldown, it connects on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, and Wyze had two incidents in 2023 and 2024 in which some users saw images from other people's cameras. For entryways, porches and garages it is an easy pick. For a bedroom or other private space, weigh that history.

Buy it again if you…

  • want sharp video and color night vision on a tight budget
  • want local microSD recording without a monthly plan
  • need one camera that works indoors and outdoors
  • use Alexa or Google Assistant

Skip it if you…

  • want to point a camera at very private spaces and are wary of Wyze's 2023-2024 incidents
  • use Apple HomeKit
  • only have 5 GHz Wi-Fi coverage where the camera goes
  • want smart alerts and full-length cloud clips without paying for a plan

The WYZE Cam v4 is a small plug-in security camera that records 2.5K (2560 x 1440) video. It has a built-in spotlight for color night vision, a magnetic base, two-way audio and an IP65 rating, so it can go indoors or outside.

We looked at expert tests, a head-to-head with the Blink Mini 2, owner forum threads and news coverage of Wyze's security incidents, so you get the full picture before you buy.

What owners love

Video that punches above its price.Tom's Guide said no budget camera looks or sounds as good, and Home Cam Cafe found faces readable at normal room distances, with good handling of bright windows next to darker rooms.
Color at night. The spotlight turns on with motion and gives full-color footage in total darkness, which reviewers praised for rooms and covered entries.
No plan needed to record. With a microSD card it can record continuously or on events without a subscription.
Flexible placement. The magnetic base and IP65 body let it go almost anywhere, and Tom's Guide picked it over the Blink Mini 2 partly because it ships with a weatherproof power connector.

What owners complain about

The free tier is limited.Without Cam Plus, motion alerts are snapshots or short clips with a five-minute cooldown between events.
2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. Some owners on Wyze's forum report cameras that drop off the network. Suggested fixes include moving the camera nearer the router and giving the 2.4 GHz band its own network name.
Choppy moments.Tom's Guide noted lower frame rates occasionally make video look choppy.
Long-range night shots go black and white. The spotlight covers a room or porch, but larger yards fall back to IR.

Cam Plus and other plans

The camera works without a subscription, but Cam Plus is where the smart features live. It is a per-camera plan that adds 14 days of rolling cloud history, full-length event clips, and person, vehicle, package and pet detection. Cam Unlimited covers every Wyze camera on an account. A higher plan, Cam Protect, adds face recognition and professional monitoring with a live agent. If you are happy reviewing footage from a microSD card, you can skip all of them.

The privacy history, honestly

In September 2023, Wyze said up to 2,300 users of its web viewer may have briefly seen feeds from 10 strangers' cameras because of a caching issue. In February 2024, after an outage, about 13,000 users were shown thumbnails from other people's cameras, and 1,504 tapped on them, according to Wyze's own figures reported by PetaPixel. Wyze blamed a third-party caching library, added an extra verification step before event videos load, and said it had hired outside security testers after the first incident.

Home Cam Cafe still recommends the v4 but suggests weighing this history before placing it somewhere sensitive. Our view: it matters most for indoor cameras in private rooms, and much less for a camera watching your front porch or driveway.

How it holds up over time

We found no rigorous multi-year durability test of the v4. Expert reviews are uniformly positive on image quality, while the main long-running owner complaints we saw were Wi-Fi drop-outs on some units rather than hardware failures.

Tips from owners

  • Add a microSD card to get recording without a subscription.
  • Give your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi its own network name if the camera keeps disconnecting.
  • Set detection zones to cut down on pointless alerts.
  • Turn on two-factor login in the Wyze app to protect your account.
