Superb for heavy workloads, but overkill for most buyers
Reviewers agree the M5 Pro 16-inch is fast, has a bright and accurate screen, and lasts close to a full day or more away from the charger. They also agree that it is a modest step over the previous M4 Pro, and that its weight, notch and premium positioning make it hard to justify unless you do sustained video, 3D, development or local AI work. One reviewer's answer was literally 'it depends', and suggested a 15-inch MacBook Air for most people. We agree: a good repeat buy for professionals, poor value for everyone else.

- edit high-resolution video, render 3D or run heavy development and AI workloads on the go
- want a large, accurate screen and a full set of ports without dongles
- are upgrading from an M1 to M3-era Pro and want a machine that stays fast for years
Skip it if you…
- do mostly browsing, documents and email, where an Air is plenty
- already own an M4 Pro, since the gain is incremental
- want a light laptop to carry all day
The 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro is Apple's mainstream high-end laptop for 2026. The tested configuration in the reviews we read pairs an 18-core CPU with a 20-core GPU, a 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR 120Hz display, three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SD card slot and MagSafe.
It is a premium-priced machine, so the real question is whether the extra performance is worth it over cheaper Macs. Because it is new, our evidence comes from professional reviews rather than years of owner reports.

What reviewers love
What reviewers criticize
Is the premium worth it?
For heavy multithreaded work, yes, according to the reviewers: it should stay fast for years. For everyday use, both Expert Reviews and the Irish Examiner pointed to the MacBook Air or the base M5 as better value. Top-spec memory and GPU configurations are described as very expensive.
How it holds up over time
We found no long-term data on this model. We also found no source that summarises buyer experiences with Apple service, repairs or warranty for it, so we make no claim either way.
