ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium Review: Would Buyers Buy It Again?

Disclosure: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. If you buy through links on this page we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How this review was made: We did not test this thermostat ourselves. This verdict rests on the Tom's Guide review (about two weeks of testing) and a review aggregator summary, listed at the end. Long-term reliability evidence is thin. Our method.

Depends

Very capable, but some extras are gimmicky

Tom's Guide found it reliable over its testing and called it the smartest of the smart thermostats, with support for Alexa, Google Assistant, HomeKit, SmartThings and IFTTT. It includes a room sensor. The same review calls the air quality monitor of limited use and the speaker weak, and an aggregator summary lists reports of false poor air readings, temperature overshoot, Wi-Fi hiccups and mixed support. Great if you want broad ecosystem support, less compelling if you just want a simple thermostat.

Buy it again if you…

  • use Siri, Alexa or Google and want one thermostat for all
  • have uneven rooms and want a remote sensor
  • like a stylish display

Skip it if you…

  • want the simplest, cheapest thermostat
  • expect a reliable air quality readout
  • need it to work fully without internet

The ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium has a 2.9-inch touchscreen, a zinc finish, a built-in speaker and microphone, an air quality monitor, and an included remote SmartSensor for temperature and occupancy. Installation needs a power (C) wire, and an adapter is included.

We combed the sources we could read and flag where evidence is thin.

What reviewers like

Broad compatibility.Tom's Guide praises support for major smart home platforms, including ones Nest lacks.
Room sensor. It can condition occupied rooms rather than just the hallway.
Design.Described as more attractive than earlier models, with a larger display.

What reviewers criticize

Air quality monitor.Tom's Guide calls its use limited; an aggregator reports false poor readings.
Weak speaker. The built-in speaker sounds weak, and Alexa sometimes routed music to it instead of a nearby Echo.
Extra sensors.Additional sensors were sold only as a two-pack at the time of that review.
Accuracy and connectivity. The aggregator lists temperature overshoot, sensor communication issues, app lag and mixed support, from user reports we could not verify individually.

How it holds up over time

Tom's Guide tested for roughly two weeks, which says little about years of use. We found no robust long-term data.
