How this review was made: We did not test this camera in person. This verdict is based on our analysis of Digital Camera World's review, CHOICE's spec listing, Ring's own plan comparison page and news reports on Ring's privacy settlement and police-sharing features, all listed at the end of this article. We found limited long-term owner data on battery life. Our method.
A solid choice if you already use Ring and accept the plan
Digital Camera World found the Spotlight Cam Plus well designed, with LED spotlights that switch on almost instantly, a siren, two-way talk, color night vision and a flexible mount. But it records only 1080p video at 24 fps, connects on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, has no local storage, and needs a paid Ring plan before it records anything; without one you get live view and alerts only. Ring also settled FTC charges in 2023 that employees and contractors could access customers' private videos, and it continues to offer a feature that lets police request footage. The reviewer's own advice: unless you already use Ring, look at other options.

Ring's privacy history
In 2023 the FTC charged that Ring let employees and contractors access customers' private videos and failed to put in place security protections that would have stopped hackers taking over accounts and cameras. Under the settlement Ring had to delete unlawfully obtained content and strengthen security, and in 2024 the FTC sent refunds to more than 117,000 affected customers. Ring said account takeovers came from passwords stolen from other companies.
Ring also runs Community Requests, which lets police ask nearby owners for footage; owners can decline. According to The Register, a planned 2025 tie-up with surveillance company Flock was cancelled in February 2026 before it launched, and Ring said no customer videos were sent to Flock. Axon still handles footage that owners choose to share.
How it holds up over time
We found no strong long-term battery data. Ring's app explains how motion settings affect battery drain, and the option of a second battery or wired power helps on busy spots. The bigger long-term factor is the ongoing plan cost.
Tips from owners
- Check your Wi-Fi signal at the mounting spot before drilling.
- Price the Ring plan in before you buy.
- Turn on two-factor login and use a unique password for your Ring account.
- Review Community Requests settings if you do not want police requests.
